bhūmikatvānavasthitatvāni citta-vikshepās te’ntarāyāh 

Disease, apathy, doubt, negligence, lethargy, attachment to worldly pleasures, confusion, failure to attain ground, backsliding – these are the obstacles that distract the mind.

What are the obstacles to liberation and knowledge of the true Self? Nine obstacles are named, but there is really only one obstacle: the sense of separation – from God, from each other, from ourselves. The obstacles are part of the path. By providing a list, this sūtra help us identify what’s happening when they arise.
