tatra śabdārtha-jñāna-vikalpaih sankīrnā savitarkā samāpattih

In savitarkā samādhi (with deliberation), word, form, and abstract understanding are co-mingled.

In savitarkā samādhi, we have an experience of transcendence, but it is a limited experience, because we are still constrained by our ideas. We confuse words and the ideas they create with what is real. In Yoga, our goal is to have a pure experience of reality that transcends ideas, concepts, and words. The spiraling swirls in this painting recapitulate the image for sūtra 1.17, in which the four progressive stages of samādhi were outlined.
