There are five activities of the mind, and they can be detrimental (painful) or helpful (not painful).

If we want to practice Yoga, it’s crucial that we understand how we think and the nature of thought. This sūtra begins that education, by identifying five categories of mental activity. Each of these can, on the one hand, be detrimental to knowing the Self (and therefore painful) or, on the other hand, each can be helpful in knowing the Self (and therefore not painful).
