śabda-jñānānupātī vastu-śūnyo vikalpah

Imagination, or conceptualization, is thought based on words, without actual substance.

Vikalpa, the third of the five categories of mental activity (listed in sūtra 1.6), is a form of abstract thinking. It includes imagination and conceptualization. Both are created by words. There is no such thing as a red, winged horse, but one appears in our minds upon hearing the words. Metaphors, like “a heart of gold,” or concepts like friendship are also vikalpa.
