anubhūta-vishayāsampramoshah smrtih

Memory is not allowing something that is experienced to escape.

Smrtih (the fifth of the five categories of mental activity, named in sūtra 1.6) is a retentive activity of the mind that encompasses both memory and attention – both examples of not letting something that is experienced escape. Attention happens when we are experiencing something, and we don't let it escape from our perceptive field. Memory is created when we don’t let go of an experience that we have had – which means much more than just holding onto our stories about ourselves and our past (like the baby shoes in the painting). Without memory, we could not read or speak, recognize friends and family, make coffee, drive a car or navigate a walk.
