Sutra 1.16
Sutra 1.16
tat param purusha-khyāter guna-vaitrshnyam
The highest form of non-attachment is when, through knowing the unbounded Self, there is no desire for any manifestation of the three guṇas.
The first level of vairāgyā, non-attachment, is deciding to let go – of expectations, needs, desires, possessions – and then doing so. In this way, we create new habitual patterns, and we actually stop experiencing desire – including desire for the results of practice. But there is a higher level of non-attachment that happens naturally once we know ourself as the unbounded Self. We realize that there is no "me” or “you” that "has" anything or that "lets go" of anything. There is nothing to need, nothing to desire, nothing to release – because there is no one who needs or desires or releases. That is true non-attachment.
